My daughter and her boyfriend took me to this fun brewery in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. They wanted me to try the Tokyo hot dog. All I can say is that I'm hooked and  I want to make this when I get home! I love hot dogs. This Tokyo hot dog is a new and different way to serve hot dogs. Put away the boring ketchup, mustard and relish and try this!

  • Prep: 15 mins
  • Cook: 30 mins

Ingredients

hot dog

hot dog bun

Teriyaki Onions

2 large onions, peeled and sliced

1 tablespoon butter

1 tablespoon olive oil

2 tablespoons teriyaki sauce

Japanese BBQ Sauce (Tonkatsu Sauce)

⅓ cup ketchup

2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

1 tablespoon soy sauce

1 tablespoon mirin

1 tablespoon sugar

¼ teaspoon garlic powder

Other Toppings

Kewpie Mayonnaise

nori

bonita flakes

sesame seeds, black or regular or both

green onions, chopped, optional

Directions

Teriyaki Onions

1On medium heat cook and stir onions in the butter and oil until half their volume. Then lower the heat and stir in teriyaki sauce and cook and stir until onions are tender and most of the liquid is evaporated. The onions will be almost caramelized. You can serve this over rice, steak, chicken, etc.

Japanese BBQ Sauce (Tonkatsu Sauce)

1In a small bowl, stir together ketchup, Worcestershire, soy sauce, mirin, sugar, mustard, and garlic powder. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a month. This sauce is typically served over panko-crusted pork.

2Top the hot dog with the onions, BBQ sauce and the rest of the toppings!
