I have to admit, I had never heard of Tennessee Onions. It appeared in my inbox, so I thought I would try it. It's very simple to make and could be a side dish to any kind of meat or used on a burger. You use sweet onion like Vidalia. Vidalia onions are a type of sweet onion. They have a mild flavor, and a relatively high sugar content. This would also be great to put on the grill.

  • Prep: 10 mins
  • Cook: 35 mins
  • Yields: 8 Servings

Ingredients

3-4 sweet onions

4 tablespoons butter

1 teaspoon salt, or to taste

1 teaspoon garlic powder

½ teaspoon oregano

1 cup mozzarella cheese, shredded

1 cup cheddar cheese, shredded

½ cup parmesan cheese, shredded

Directions

1Heat oven to 350° F and prepare a 9×13 dish with non-stick cooking spray.

2Turning the onion sideways, slice into ¼-inch rounds and separate the rings.

3Spread onion rings in baking dish and sprinkle with the salt, garlic powder, and oregano.

4Slice the butter into approximately 8 pats and place evenly across the dish.

5Sprinkle the Italian blend and cheddar cheese over the onions and then add the parmesan on the very top.

6Bake for 35-40 minutes or until cheese is starting to bubble and brown.

Walla Walla Sweet Onions are the BEST for this recipe! Onion rings take so much longer to make. I can’t wait to try this.

This looks really interesting. An alternative for those of us who LOVE onion rings, but don’t want to venture down that culinary road. Will definitely fix.

P.S. The Crispy Parmesan Potato Stacks were a winner.

My god those look delicious. Are we supposed to eat them with a knife & fork or with our hands?
