I received a recipe in my inbox called Steak San Marino. I then proceeded to fall down a rabbit hole as I often do while researching this dish. San Marino is one of the smallest countries in the world. It is found in southern Europe and is fully surrounded by Italy (this is called an enclave, and only the Vatican City, Lesotho and San Marino are like this). Fewer than 30,000 people live there. It measures just 0.2 square miles, almost 120 times smaller than the island of Manhattan! I have lived in San Marino, CA and actually went to high school there. This Steak San Marino is made in a slow cooker and doesn't have many ingredients, but is very comforting and delicious. It's served on a bed of white rice and is very family-friendly, especially since online school has started for many. It only takes about 15 minutes to make and cooks all day and will fill your home full of wonderful aromas.
Prep: 15 mins
Cook: 8 hrs
Yields: 6 Servings
Ingredients
¼ cup all-purpose flour
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon pepper
1 beef top round steak (1½ pounds), cut into six pieces
2 large carrots, sliced
1 celery rib, sliced
8 ounce can tomato sauce
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 bay leaf
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
½ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
splash or two of red wine, optional
3 cups hot cooked rice
Directions
1In a large resealable plastic bag, combine the flour, salt and pepper. Add beef, a few pieces at a time, and shake to coat. Transfer to a 4-quart slow cooker. In a small bowl, combine the carrots, celery, tomato sauce, garlic, bay leaf, Italian seasoning, Worcestershire sauce and splash or two of red wine. Pour over beef. Cover and cook on low for 8 to 10 hours, or high for 4 to 5 hours. or until beef is tender. Discard bay leaf. Serve with rice.
Freeze option
1Place cooked steak and vegetables in freezer containers; top with sauce. Cool and freeze. To use, partially thaw in refrigerator overnight. Heat through in a covered saucepan, gently stirring and adding a little water if necessary.

Who knew? All those years living in San Marino (albeit the one in California) and we have a national dish? It was very good and would be a crowd pleaser. I wonder how it would be served over noodles?
