Fire Crackers

I came across this crazy recipe for Fire Crackers in Southern Living magazine. They are also known as Alabama or Cowboy Crackers. The recipe seemed so strange to me, that I decided to make them. Truth be told, I only used 1 sleeve of crackers. I thought it might be a bit much for my husband and me to eat an entire box of oil-saturated saltines! I like anything hot and spicy! You have to leave them overnight in a Ziploc bag before you bake them. And it turns out they are really good, especially with an ice-cold beer!

  • Prep: 5 mins
  • Cook: 15 mins

Ingredients

16-ounce package of saltine crackers

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

½ teaspoon black pepper

4 tablespoons (about 2 packages) ranch dressing mix

3 tablespoons red pepper flakes

2 cups olive oil

Directions

1Using a large gallon Ziploc bag, pour in the olive oil, seasonings, and spices. Close the bag and knead to thoroughly mix the ingredients together.

2Place all 4 sleeves of crackers in the bag, re-seal, and gently turn the bag over several times to coat the crackers with the spice mixture. The more times you do, this the better the coating.

3Let the bag sit overnight.

4Remove crackers and lay out on a baking sheet. Bake at 250°F for about 15 minutes.
