These Amish Apple Dumplings are a popular traditional dessert where I grew up in Northern Indiana.
Prep: 20 mins
Cook: 50 mins
Yields: 6 Servings
Ingredients
6 apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
2 cups flour
2½ teaspoons baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
⅔ cup shortening
½ cup milk
Sauce
2 cups brown sugar
2 cups water
¼ teaspoon cinnamon
¼ teaspoon nutmeg
¼ cup butter
Directions
1Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
2Combine flour, baking powder, and salt, then add the shortening using a pastry blender. Next add the milk and combine. Cover and refrigerate for 1 hour or until easy to handle.
3Roll dough for pastry. If dough seems a little dry, add just a tiny amount of milk. Cut dough into six squares, one for each apple.
4Set an apple onto each square and form the dough around the apple.
5Place in a glass 8 x 8 square baking dish.
6Bake, uncovered, for 15 minutes.
7Meanwhile, in a pan on the stove, combine brown sugar, water, and seasonings. Cook for five minutes and remove from heat.
8Add in the butter, stirring to melt. Pour Sauce over uncooked dumplings.
9Bake for an additional 35 - 40 minutes or until golden brown.
